The university was established in 2007 by the government of India. The university has six schools of studies. Sikkim University also has three research centers, namely Centre for Endangered Languages funded by the UGC, Maulana Azad Centre for Northeast Studies funded by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies, Kolkata and Centre for Bioinformatics funded by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The university is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with grade A. Sikkim University Gangtok is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The mission and vision of the university is to provide quality education and nurture professionals to serve the society and the nation.
