Gulbarga University was established on 10th September 1980 as the State University by Act of State Government of Karnataka under section 3 of Karnataka State Universities Act 1976, substituted by KSU Act 2000. The University has been recognized by the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 under 2(f) and 12(b), as affiliating university. It was earlier, a Post Graduate Centre of Karnataka University, Dharwad from 1970-1980.
